Our Story
About The Sycamore School
Founded by educators who have spent their careers asking what school could be at its very best, and who decided to build it themselves.
A Symbol of Who We Are
The Story Behind the Shield
Before The Sycamore School had a name, its founders sat beneath a great sycamore tree on a quiet afternoon in Richmond and began imagining the kind of school they believed children deserved. The tree offered shade, strength, and stillness. Its roots reached deep into the ground, while its branches stretched outward with room to grow. That image stayed with them. It became more than a tree. It became the first symbol of the school itself: rooted, steady, alive, and reaching.
Every element of the shield grows from that founding vision.
The Sycamore Tree
The sycamore tree stands at the center of the shield because it represents the heart of the school. Known for its broad canopy, strong trunk, distinctive bark, and deep roots, the sycamore reflects what we want children to experience here: shelter, stability, belonging, and growth.
A sycamore does not grow in haste. It grows over time, with strength and purpose. In the same way, The Sycamore School is built for the long work of education. We believe children need a strong foundation before they can reach with confidence. They need adults who will nurture them, challenge them, and give them room to become.
The Open Book
The open book represents the academic life of the school. Learning at Sycamore is not passive. It is active, thoughtful, and alive. Children are taught to read closely, listen carefully, think deeply, and ask meaningful questions.
The book reminds us that knowledge matters. Ideas matter. Language matters. A Sycamore education is built on academic substance, intellectual curiosity, and a genuine love of learning.
The Blue Heron
The blue heron represents patience, precision, and quiet strength. A heron does not rush. It watches. It waits. It moves with intention when the time is right.
That image reflects the kind of teaching we value. Good educators know when to guide, when to challenge, when to wait, and when to act. Children do not all grow at the same pace, and learning cannot be forced before it is ready. The blue heron reminds us to be observant, steady, and purposeful in our work with every child.
The Shield
Together, the sycamore tree, the open book, and the blue heron form a shield that represents the identity of The Sycamore School. It is a symbol of protection, purpose, and promise. It reflects a school rooted in learning, inspired by discovery, and committed to helping children grow with strength, confidence, and care.
Why We Started
Built with Purpose.
Rooted in Experience.
We believe children learn best when they feel known, safe, and genuinely engaged. The Sycamore School was built around that belief: a school where relationships come first, curiosity is nurtured, and every child has the space to grow at their own pace.
The Sycamore School is led by educators with more than 40 years of combined experience in school leadership, curriculum development, and family engagement, people who understand how children develop and what it takes to build a school that truly serves them.
We believe childhood is not a waiting room. It is the most important time to develop strong habits of mind, a love of learning, and a sense of self. Everything we do at The Sycamore School is designed with that in mind.

School Culture
How We Treat Each Other
Our culture is built on five shared commitments. They are not rules. They are values we hold together, practiced every day by students and adults alike.
Safe
Children cannot learn when they don't feel safe. We protect every child's physical and emotional security, always.
Kind
Kindness is taught explicitly and practiced daily, with peers, teachers, and ourselves. It is the foundation of everything else.
Responsible
Children learn that their choices matter to themselves, their classmates, and their community. Accountability builds character.
Curious
We come prepared, present, and open, with the materials we need and the mindset to grow. Questions are welcome. Wonder is the starting point.
Caring
Our school belongs to all of us. We look out for each other, treat shared spaces with respect, and show up for our community every day.
