The Sycamore School

Deep Roots.
Wide Horizons.

Deep Roots. Wide Horizons.

The Sycamore School is a small, intentional school built on inquiry, outdoor learning, and genuine relationships. We cultivate curious, capable, kind human beings, one child at a time.

Deep Roots. Wide Horizons.

At The Sycamore School, we believe children need both a strong foundation and opportunities to explore the world around them.

Deep Roots

"Deep Roots" represents the essential academic and personal skills that help children thrive. Through strong instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, critical thinking, and character development, students develop the confidence and knowledge they need to grow. Like the roots of a sycamore tree, these foundations provide strength, stability, and support throughout a child's educational journey.

Wide Horizons

"Wide Horizons" reflects our commitment to experiential learning and discovery. Through field trips, outdoor education, community partnerships, creative projects, and real-world experiences, students expand their understanding of the world and their place within it. We encourage children to be curious, ask questions, explore new ideas, and develop a sense of wonder about the possibilities that lie ahead.

Together, "Deep Roots. Wide Horizons." captures our belief that the best education prepares students not only to succeed academically, but also to engage thoughtfully, confidently, and compassionately with the world around them.

We believe children learn best when they feel safe, known, and engaged. Our small school model means every child is seen, every day. The Sycamore School is not a compromise. It is a carefully designed environment where academic rigor and joyful childhood coexist.

Student-Centered

Every decision is made with the whole child in mind: academically, socially, and emotionally.

Family Partnership

We view families as co-educators. Regular communication and community events keep everyone connected.

Inquiry-Based

Children learn by doing, questioning, and discovering, guided by teachers who love their craft.

Community Connection

The Sycamore School is a community, not just a school. We celebrate milestones, gather families, and support each other.

Richmond's Richest Learning Corridor

Richmond is our classroom. The Sycamore School draws on the city's remarkable network of parks, museums, cultural institutions, and natural spaces to bring learning to life beyond our walls. Tap any photo to learn more.

Our Approach

Two classes, K–2 (8–10 students) and 3–5 (10–12 students), keep relationships deep and instruction personal. Each class has a dedicated teacher, supported by a shared teacher assistant who floats between both classrooms. Our curriculum is clear in design, rigorous in expectation, and joyful in practice.

Learning Is an Experience

Field Trips

From the train to Washington, D.C. to the Moton Museum in Farmville, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, and the State Fair — these are the trips planned for the upcoming school year.

Safe

Every child deserves to feel physically and emotionally safe at school, every single day.

Kind

We treat each other, and ourselves, with genuine care and respect.

Responsible

Children learn to own their choices, their work, and their impact on others.

Curious

We come each day open, prepared, and ready to wonder. Questions are welcome. Wonder is the starting point.

Caring

We look out for each other, treat shared spaces with respect, and show up for our community every day.
